The ENECON Australia team was asked to help an offshore oil company with abrasion problems inside a caisson spool used on floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels. Common uses for caissons like these are firewater and seawater lift.
The seawater travels at a high velocity and the particulates in it cause erosion due to abrasion. Once these abrasion problems exist, the caisson begins to become ineffective.
It was decided that a newly fabricated caisson would be installed and before installation it would be protected from internal abrasion with CeramAlloy CBX.
The caisson was first abrasive blasted then primed with CeramAlloy CL+AC. The CeramAlloy CBX was then applied at an average of 5mm thick. The FPSO operator was extremely pleased with the performance results of this CBX application.
