Protecting patients and nurses by taking care of the floor

You can probably imagine that having a dangerous floor in a Veterans’ Administration Hospital Spinal Cord Unit, or any hospital, would not be a good thing for patients, nurses, or visitors.

It turns out that the floor in this particular hospital had never been pitched properly so the water from the showers went right out from the showers and under the door. People were slipping and no one was happy with the dangerous situation.

In addition to the obvious problem of the slippery floor the solution needed to be wheelchair-accessible, there should be minimal disruption to the patients, and there should be no nasty fumes.

First we built speed bumps at the edge of the showers to contain the water but with a gradual slope so that the showers were accessible by wheelchairs. We chose ENCRETE Duraquartz which allowed the patients in 19 rooms to remain in their rooms during the installation. There were no nasty smells or dangerous fumes to cause concern, and no breaks in the routine of the patients.

The administration was happy because the installation was cost-effective and the nurses and attendants were happy because they were safer and could focus on taking care of the patients.
