Keeping the trolleys moving year after year

When considering whether to repair rather than replace a common question is “How long will it last?” The answer in the case of the South East Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) is eight years and counting.

SEPTA was having a problem with the bolster (part of the trolley wheel assembly).  The underside of the assembly was becoming corroded and due to the age of the trolley and the assembly, parts were no longer made.  The lifecycle of trolleys is such that during the course of their life parts are not longer made and plans must be made for replacement with new designs. This can take many years and cost huge sums, so the ability to extend the life of the bolsters, and therefore the trolleys, was the only solution other than taking them out of service.
